High-Pressure Solutions: When to Specify PN25 PPR Valves in Solar Heating Systems

February 14, 2026

In the modern plumbing industry, PPR systems are the standard material for hot and cold water plumbing. This standard must be backed by international compliance, including ISO9001 for quality management and DIN 8077/8078 standards. This ensures that every pipe and PPR valve meets specifications for pressure resistance and long-term thermal stability.

However, not all PPR (Polypropylene Random Copolymer) pipes can withstand high temperatures. That’s why you need to look at the “PN” rating to determine if the pipe or valve can handle the range of temperatures.

A PN 25 valve is the “heavyweight” valve and is rated for 25 bars of pressure (about 362 psi). You can use a standard PN16 or PN20 rating for a standard kitchen sink. However, if the plumbing system is under serious stress, you need valves with PN25 rating. In this article, you will learn how to select the right valve for your solar thermal systems.

Pressure & Temperature in Solar Heating Systems

Solar collectors are devices that are installed with solar thermal systems. They capture and collect sunlight and convert them into usable energy. They are often installed in high-apartment buildings and hit peak temperatures of 80°C (176°F). Thus, a PPR heating valve in a solar loop must manage fluid that fluctuates between ambient temperature and near-boiling points.

During power outages or pump failures on extremely hot days, the system may reach stagnation. This can cause internal pressure to increase rapidly as fluid expands. A standard PPR valve may get worn out if the PN rating cannot handle the peak thermal expansion events. Also, the pressure-bearing capacity of PPR decreases when the operating temperature increases.

Thus, selecting a high temperature PPR valve with the right PN rating should help maintain a safety margin at 70°C or 95°C. At this point, a 25-bar valveis the standard choice for your solar heating system.

What is the Difference Between a PN20 and a PN 25 Valve?

The primary difference between PN25 and PN 20 valve ratings lies in wall thickness and specific grade of raw materials.  A PN20 PPR valve is designed for a normal pressure of 2.0 MPa (20 bar) at 20°C.  On the other hand, a 25 bar rated unit is engineered for 2.5 MPa (25 bar).

For solar applications, a PN 25 provides thicker structural walls. These walls resist slow deformation of plastic under constant heat and stress. Even when the system operates at the highest thermal limits, the high temperature PPR valve remains leak-proof at the fusion joints. This is due to the extra material density of the valve.

Below is a table that outlines the differences and applications:

Application ScenarioTypical Stress FactorsPN20 PPR Valve PerformancePN25 PPR Valve (High Pressure) Performance
High-Rise Residential TowersStatic head pressure + Water hammer (Surges)Operates near structural limits; prone to fatigue from pump start-up shocks.Provides mechanical “headroom” to absorb pressure spikes without wall stress.
Commercial Solar StagnationExtreme heat (90°C+) + Fluid expansionSignificant “de-rating” occurs; material softens and may fail under steam pressure.Retains higher pressure capacity at peak temperatures due to increased wall density.
Industrial Process HeatingConstant thermal load (75°C+) + 24/7 operationSusceptible to Creep Rupture; molecules “stretch” over time leading to leaks.Thicker SDR (Standard Dimension Ratio) resists molecular deformation for long-term stability.
District Heating Pump StationsHigh-frequency mechanical vibrationThinner walls may lead to seat distortion and internal bypass leaks.Reinforced body acts as a vibration dampener, maintaining perfect internal alignment.

Failure Risks of Under-Specification

When selecting valves for a high-pressure solar loop, choose the recommended valve with the right PN rating. Using a lower-rated valve poses several industrial risks, such as:

  • Creep Rupture: Microscopic cracks will appear on the valves which reduces the material’s lifespan. This is caused by prolonged exposure to high heat.
  • Joint Weakness: Prolonged heat exposure also causes thermal expansion. When this cycle is repeated, it places immense stress on the fusion bond between the pipe and the PPR heating valve.
  • System Downtime: Fluid loss and collector damage are often caused by under-specified valves. These are often the common failure points.

Engineers can provide a safety allowance against these common industry pain points. Specifying a 25-bar valve ensures that the system survives more than 25 years of service.

Selecting Valves for Long-Term Stability

Engineers must verify compliance with international standards such as DIN 8077/8078 or ISO 15874.  This is a strict requirement when choosing a PPR heating valve. These standards define the required specifications such as dimensions and pressure tests.

A high temperature PPR valve must handle the specific SDR (Standard Dimension Ratio) of the piping system.  A stable PPR valve should also feature CW617N brass alloy inserts for threaded connections. This prevents galvanic corrosion and ensures a secure mechanical fit with metal manifolds.

DESO High-Pressure Valve Solutions

DESO, one of the manufacturers of PPR pipes, specializes in manufacturing reinforced PN 25 valve units. Our high temperature PPR valve line is specifically made for solar thermal applications. They utilize 100% Borealis or Hyosung raw materials to guarantee chemical stability.

The PPR heating valve is tested at 95°C for 1,000 hours. This verifies its resistance to thermal degradation as per ISO 15874 clause 11.2 (or similar). Contractors aim to provide residential or commercial clients with a system rated for 25-bar operation.  By meeting these components, callbacks and rework are eliminated.

Conclusion

Choosing a PN 25 valve is a proactive measure to ensure the safety and efficiency of a solar heating system. Engineers must specify the right valves based on the plumbing system requirements. While a standard PPR valve might be enough for standard plumbing, the thermal demands of a solar heating system requires a more durable valve. By installing the correct PPR heating valve, you can be assured of system safety, efficiency, and a certified 25-year service life.
