PPR (polypropylene random copolymer) is volume-limited cargo: it fills the container on space before weight. Plan in the space you can actually pack, nest smaller pipes inside larger ones, and fill gaps with fitting cartons or dunnage, meaning blocking material that stops cargo shifting. Write packaging, marking and photo evidence into the purchase order. DESO publishes PPR pipe and fitting ranges, but confirm the container plan, bundle size and pallet standard in writing before you order.

What Should You Decide Before Booking a Container?

The container is full and the scale has barely moved. That is normal because PPR pipe is mostly air by volume. This checklist is for importers, distributors and procurement managers who need a load that protects the pipe, uses paid space and matches the documents. You will confirm the container limit, convert the order into bundles, cartons and pallets, plan how pipes nest and spaces are filled, set the stack order, write packaging into the purchase order, and agree the loading evidence and document set. Then you can check landed cost against a realistic fill.

Why Does a Container of PPR Pipe Fill Up on Space, Not Weight?

Every container has two ceilings. The door plate gives the maximum gross weight, meaning the container plus cargo. Subtract the tare, the empty container’s weight, and you get the payload, or the most cargo weight the unit may carry. The carrier or road limit can be lower. The internal volume sets the other ceiling. A 40ft box of pipe can look full while the scale is far below its payload because the bundles are mostly air. That makes PPR volume-limited cargo: space runs out first, so extra tonnes do not help. Dense cargo such as brass valves can reach the weight limit with floor space left. Know which limit binds before you book. Plan in cubic metres, then check weight. Ignoring volume pays for air. Ignoring weight can overload the unit.

How Much PPR Pipe Fits in a 20ft, 40ft or 40ft High Cube Container?

Published PPR container-planning guidance, captured in October 2026, gives the ranges below. Treat them as that publisher’s planning estimates, not carrier guarantees. CBM means cubic metres. The theoretical figure is the empty box. The realistic figure is what a mixed load may use.

ContainerTheoretical internal volumeRealistic usable PPR volume
20ft standardAbout 33 CBM26 to 28 CBM
40ft standardAbout 67 CBM55 to 58 CBM
40ft High CubeAbout 76 CBM65 to 68 CBM

The gap is stowage loss, meaning space lost around round bundles and cartons. Usable CBM is the space you can actually pack. Size the order from that number.

A 40HQ (High Cube) only helps if you can sell the extra pipe. A full 20ft with a clean mix may be easier to finance and unload than a half-filled 40HQ. Start with the diameters and lengths you actually sell. DESO’s PPR pipe range lists the published options. Confirm the current packing data for those items before you treat any CBM figure as yours.

Which Packaging Options Actually Protect PPR Pipe?

Decision flow diagram for PPR container loading and packaging with three steps: Protect goods, Load plan, and Dispatch.

Packaging does three separate jobs. Specify each one.

  • Mechanical protection. The wrap, straps and end caps should limit impact, rubbing, movement and pressure on one spot.
  • Environmental protection. The pack should limit exposure to rain, dust and sunlight during transit and yard storage.
  • Identification. Every bundle and carton needs a readable SKU, the stock code for each item, plus size, pressure class (rated pressure category) and piece count.

A supplier can meet one job and miss another. A thick bag may keep rain out and still let a bundle slide. A clear label may face the wrong way for a forklift driver. Ask for the material, closure, strap pattern, end protection, carton grade and mark placement in writing. “Export standard” is not a specification.

How Should Bundles, Cartons and Pallets Be Configured?

Start with the supplier’s standard pack, then change only what the order needs. Ask for the bundle diameter, pieces per bundle, strap material and strap count, end protection, bundle weight and lift points. Confirm whether small sizes will be nested inside larger ones before loading or packed as separate bundles. That choice changes the footprint and the unloading sequence.

For cartons, ask for board grade (the strength and weight of the board), closure method, internal separation and marked quantity. For pallets, ask for size, load height and forklift or pallet-truck access. A pallet speeds up warehouse handling but takes up space and adds weight. Floor-loaded bundles take more handling at the destination.

If you sell under your own brand, ask what the private-label (OEM) packaging route can print and where each mark goes. Confirm artwork, mark content and approval timing in writing. Do not assume a standard export pack matches your label or your customer’s receiving rules.

How Do You Plan the Loading Sequence?

Three-step buyer checklist infographic for PPR container loading, covering before loading, at container, and at destination, titled Buyer checks under a Sourcing Guide.

Build the load from the floor up and the far end to the doors. In a mixed load, place heavy or dense items low and spread their weight along the floor. Put light, bulky pipe above them. Keep heavy items away from the door end.

Nesting drives the pipe order. Load the largest diameter first, then slide smaller bundles inside or alongside it. A nested bundle does not need its own floor space. Plan this before strapping, because a late change slows the crew and can damage the ends.

Reserve the door end for goods that can take handling, because that end is often handled first. It also needs a flat, stable face so the doors close. Plan the unloading order now, so the SKU your customer needs first is not behind the whole load.

A void is an empty space that saleable goods cannot fill. Close it with dunnage or bracing, meaning supports that stop the load shifting. Empty space is not free if cargo can move into it in transit.

What Changes When You Mix Pipe With Fittings or Valves?

Pipe is light for its volume. Fittings, brass valves and metal parts are dense. A mixed load can use both limits if you plan the density.

Break-even density is the permitted payload divided by the usable volume. At that density, weight and space run out together. Below it, you are paying for space before payload. Above it, weight limits the load and extra cubic metres do not help. Use the actual payload and volume you have confirmed, not a figure copied from a table.

Use fitting cartons to close the triangular gaps between round bundles and the space at the door end. DESO’s PPR fitting range shows the published product families. Confirm carton dimensions and piece counts for the items you order before you count on them to fill space.

A full container of slow-moving stock you cannot sell is not a saving. Mix for sell-through first, then for density. A mixed load also creates more document lines.

What Should the Purchase Order Say About Packaging?

Packaging belongs in the purchase order (PO) before production starts. A change after production is a schedule risk. Use clauses that name a material, a method and an acceptance check, not a phrase like “export standard”.

ClauseWhat to write
Outer packBag or wrap material, thickness where relevant, closure method
BundleDiameter, pieces, strap type and count, end protection
CartonBoard grade, closure, internal separation, marked quantity
PalletSize, load height, handling type, where used
MarkingSKU, size, pressure class, quantity, destination and label placement
LoadingNesting plan, heavy-low rule, dunnage, door-end control
EvidencePhoto stages, container number, seal number, document set

Name the packing list, commercial invoice and bill of lading in the packaging clause set. They must describe the same goods, quantity, weight and dimensions. A mismatch can trigger a customs query.

What Documents and Photos Should You Require Before Sailing?

Ask for the packing list, commercial invoice and bill of lading before the container leaves the factory. Check that the description, quantity, weight and dimensions match the physical load. Check the carton count against the loading plan. A document error is easier to fix at the factory than at the port.

Ask for staged photos. One set before loading shows the empty container and the container number. One set at half load shows the nesting, stack order and dunnage. One set after closing shows the doors, seal and container number.

DESO's quality inspection page describes its inspection process. Ask how inspection and loading photos are handled for your order, and who signs off before the doors close.

How Does Container Fill Change Your Landed Cost?

Landed cost is the total cost of the goods once they reach your warehouse. Freight per unit is the container freight divided by saleable units. Fill changes that denominator. Less pipe means the same freight is spread over fewer metres or tonnes. That raises landed cost.

Damage adds a second cost. Crushed ends, scuffed pipe and broken cartons create rework, replacement and claim work. A tight load with poor dunnage can cost more than a looser load that arrives clean. Unloading time is a third cost. Floor-loaded bundles may use space well and still take longer to handle at the destination.

Fill is not the only number. Compare freight per saleable unit, expected damage and handling time together. A lower fill with a clean discharge can beat a full container with a costly claim.

What Common Loading Mistakes Cost Importers Money?

  • Planning by weight only. PPR runs out of space first, so a weight target can leave paid space unused.
  • Leaving packaging to the port. A late change to bags, straps or marks can delay production and loading.
  • Loading large pipe first and leaving small pipe loose. That wastes the nesting gain and creates an unstable face.
  • Putting heavy fittings at the door. The door end often takes the most handling, so dense cargo there raises damage risk.
  • Letting the packing list drift from the load. One extra carton count or a changed weight can trigger a customs query.

What Else Should You Confirm Before You Load?

Does nesting pipe reduce the number of bundles I need?

Nesting can reduce the number of separate bundle footprints, but not the number of pieces you buy. The bundle count depends on the supplier’s pack for each size. Ask for the proposed bundle list before you approve the load plan.

Can I load pipe, fittings and valves in one container?

Yes, if you plan the density and the documents. Put heavy valves low and spread their weight. Use fitting cartons to fill gaps. Confirm the mixed-load plan and the packing list with the supplier before production.

How full should a PPR container be?

No single fill percentage fits every load. Work from usable CBM, leave space for dunnage and access, and check the payload on the door plate. A load that closes cleanly and unloads safely is a better target than a theoretical maximum.

What Should You Do Next?

Send your supplier the destination market, pipe sizes, expected fitting mix, target volume and any packaging or marking requirements. Ask for a packing plan and a container sketch in return. Check the plan against the door plate and the packing list before you approve production. For supplier context, read DESO’s company and production base page. Then send your order details to start that review.
