Frequently Asked Questions

Technical Q&A for hotel & resort PPR piping system design, selection, installation, and quality assurance.

I. System Design & Selection
According to DESO product specifications, PPR pipe pressure ratings include PN10, PN12.5, PN16, and PN20 (up to 2.5 MPa). General recommendations:

Hotel Cold Water Systems: PN10 or PN12.5 rating — sufficient for normal cold water supply pressure.
Hotel Hot Water Systems: PN16 or PN20 rating — to withstand higher operating pressures and temperatures in central hot water systems.
For high-rise hotel water supply systems, PPR pipe selection should follow these principles:

Lower floors (static pressure higher): Use PN20 rated pipes for main risers and ground-floor distribution where combined static + pump pressure is highest.
Mid-range floors: PN16 rated pipes are typically sufficient for branch lines and intermediate zones.
Upper floors: PN10–PN12.5 for end-of-line fixtures where pressure is lower.
Zoned pressure regulation: Install pressure-reducing valves at zone transitions to limit pressure in upper zones, allowing consistent PN-rated pipe usage.
Vertical risers: Recommend Fiber Composite PPR or Aluminum Composite PPR for their low thermal expansion and enhanced dimensional stability over tall vertical runs.
Hot water risers: Always specify minimum PN16 for any vertical hot water distribution due to combined thermal and static pressure effects.

Contact DESO engineering team for project-specific hydraulic calculations and zone-by-zone pipe schedules.
II. Hot Water System Design
DESO PPR pipes are fully suitable for hotel 24-hour hot water recirculation systems. The products exhibit excellent heat resistance, thermal stability, and creep resistance, with a design service life of 50+ years under normal operating conditions.
Yes, pressure derating is required when PPR pipes operate at elevated temperatures continuously. According to DIN8077/8078 and ISO15874-2 standards:

Pressure Derating Reference Table (PP-R / PP-RCT):
• At 20°C: 100% of PN rating (no derating)
• At 40°C: ~85% of PN rating
• At 60°C: ~65% of PN rating
• At 70°C: ~50% of PN rating
• At 80°C: ~35% of PN rating
• At 95°C: ~20% of PN rating (short-term peak only)

Practical Example: A PN20 pipe (2.5 MPa at 20°C) used in a 70°C continuous hot water recirculation system has an effective long-term pressure capacity of approximately 1.25 MPa — still adequate for most hotel applications when properly zoned. For systems operating above 70°C continuously, we recommend selecting one PN grade higher than the calculated requirement, or using PP-RCT/Fiber Composite grades which offer improved high-temperature performance.
Different heat sources have specific requirements when integrated with PPR piping systems:

Boiler Systems:
• Install a tempering/mixing valve between boiler output (>80°C) and PPR distribution network to limit inlet temperature to ≤70°C
• Use PN16 minimum for all boiler-adjacent piping
• Provide expansion loops or compensators every 10–15 meters of straight run
• Ensure proper support spacing: 1.0–1.5m for hot water lines

Air-Source Heat Pump Systems:
• Typical outlet temperature 55–60°C — well within PPR comfort zone; PN10–PN12.5 often sufficient for distribution
• Still recommend PN16 for primary loop from heat pump to storage tank
• Thermal insulation mandatory to minimize heat loss in the lower-temperature operation range

Solar Water Heating Systems:
• Solar collector circuit can exceed 100°C during stagnation — do not connect standard PPR directly to solar collectors
• Use a solar station with heat exchanger to isolate collector loop from PPR domestic water loop
• PPR piping on the domestic side (post heat-exchanger) follows standard hot water guidelines
• For solar-preheated storage tanks feeding PPR distribution: ensure mixing valve limits temperature to ≤70°C

Common Requirements for All Heat Sources:
• Install safety relief valves set to appropriate system pressure
• Include check valves to prevent reverse thermosiphon circulation
• Provide accessible isolation valves at each equipment connection for maintenance
DESO products undergo rigorous Hydrostatic Pressure Testing and other inspections before leaving the factory. After hotel project installation is complete, we recommend conducting system water pressure tests in accordance with relevant national/regional standards:

Strength Test: Typically 1.5 × working pressure, hold for no less than 30 minutes
Tightness Test: Hold at working pressure for no less than 2 hours
Acceptance Criterion: No leakage or deformation at any connection point

For hotel-scale projects, we also recommend:
• Documented test procedure witnessed by project engineer
• Pressure gauge calibration certificate (<12 months old)
• Test report with ambient temperature, test pressure duration, and visual inspection results recorded
• Photographic evidence of key test points before concealment
III. Product Performance
Common PPR heat fusion defects and prevention measures for large-scale hotel projects:

Cold Weld (Incomplete Fusion):
• Cause: Heating time too short; welding head not at proper temperature (260°C); contaminated or oxidized pipe surface
• Prevention: Use calibrated timer for each size; verify temperature indicator light; clean and deburr pipe ends; scrape oxidation layer before heating
• Detection: Visible fusion ring should be uniform on both sides of joint; perform pull-back test on sample joints

Overheating (Carbonization):
• Cause: Exceeding heating time significantly; welding head temperature too high
• Prevention: Strict adherence to time table; replace worn/damaged heater plates; allow plates to recover temperature between joints
• Consequence: Material degradation at joint reduces pressure rating — cut out and redo affected joints

Leakage After Pressurization:
• Causes: Angular misalignment during insertion; pipe pushed past fusion depth mark causing flow restriction; moving joint before cooling complete; using mismatched pipe/fitting brands or material grades
• Prevention: Mark fusion depth clearly; insert straight without rotation; hold joint stationary through full cooling period; use only matching brand pipe and fittings from same production batch when possible

Best Practices for Large Hotel Projects:
• Train all welders on standardized procedure before project start
• Assign dedicated QC personnel to inspect sample joints daily
• Perform section-by-section pressure test before concealment
• Document welder ID, date/time, and joint location for traceability
• Keep spare pipe/fittings on site for immediate rework if needed
DESO PPR pipes deliver the following performance characteristics:

Corrosion Resistance: Excellent chemical resistance to a wide range of water chemistries and treatment chemicals — suitable for diverse water quality environments including softened water, chlorinated supplies, and mildly aggressive conditions.
Anti-Scaling: Smooth inner pipe wall surface (low friction coefficient) prevents mineral deposit buildup, maintaining design flow rates throughout the system lifespan.
Drinking Water Safety: Products certified by British WRAS, German DVGW, and other international potable water standards, confirming compliance with global drinking water hygiene requirements including antibacterial protection properties.
DESO offers multiple solutions to minimize thermal expansion impacts in hotel hot water piping:

PPR Fiber Composite Pipe: Contains 20% glass fiber reinforcement, significantly improving pipe strength, thermal stability, and reducing linear thermal expansion coefficient by approximately 35-50% compared to standard PPR — ideal for long hot water runs in hotel corridor ceilings and vertical risers.
PPR Aluminum Composite Pipe: Three-layer structure (PPR-Al-PPR) provides outstanding dimensional stability with near-zero linear expansion, excellent pressure retention, and enhanced rigidity — recommended for exposed runs where dimensional stability is critical.
Supporting Measures: Properly spaced pipe supports/hangers, strategic placement of expansion loops or compensators at direction changes, and allowing guided axial movement at fixed-point anchors also effectively control thermal expansion stresses regardless of pipe type selected.
IV. Hotel Application Scenarios
DESO PPR pipes are suitable for hotel kitchens, laundry rooms, SPA, and similar high-temperature, high-humidity environments. The product temperature range reaches -20°C to +95°C with excellent chemical corrosion resistance and thermal stability.

For specialized environments such as swimming pools where chlorine or salt-water treatment chemicals may be present, we recommend selecting appropriate pressure ratings and pipe types (such as Fiber Composite PPR or Aluminum Composite PPR) based on actual water chemistry and treatment protocol. Consult our engineering team for environment-specific material recommendations.
Compared with galvanized steel, copper, and CPVC alternatives, DESO PPR pipes offer the following technical advantages in hotel water supply systems:

Superior Thermal Insulation: Significantly reduces heat energy loss in hot water distribution, lowering operating costs
Excellent Noise Reduction: Lower flow noise transmission compared with metal piping, enhancing guest comfort in rooms adjacent to shafts and corridors
Corrosion & Scale Free: Will not rust, corrode, or build up mineral deposits — maintains design flow rates for the full system life
Monolithic Fusion Joints: Heat-fused connections create homogeneous, leak-free joints — eliminates the multi-joint failure risk of threaded/soldered/brazed systems
50+ Year Service Life: Reduces long-term maintenance and replacement costs dramatically
Lightweight & Fast Installation: Lower handling and labor costs versus metal alternatives
DESO PPR systems help hotels reduce energy consumption, minimize noise, and improve operational efficiency through:

Thermal Insulation Performance: Low thermal conductivity of polypropylene (≈0.24 W/m·K vs. ≈400 W/m·K for copper) inherently reduces heat loss during hot water delivery, decreasing boiler/heat pump runtime and fuel/electricity consumption
Smooth Interior Surface: Low friction coefficient maintains design flow velocity with smaller pump head requirements, improving hydraulic efficiency
Noise Dampening: Viscoelastic polymer structure absorbs water hammer and flow-induced vibration, significantly reducing acoustic transmission through building structure — critical for luxury hotel acoustics
Thermal Stability: Consistent material properties across the HVAC-compatible temperature range enable stable temperature control and predictable system behavior in building automation integration
